The History of Motegi
Motegi is a town with a rich history. Situated in Tochigi Prefecture, Motegi operates under a mayor-council form of governance and forms part of Tochigi 4th District for lower house Diet of Japan representation.
Honda began building Twin Ring Motegi, one of the world’s largest racing facilities, in 1996. A combination of oval/road course that sits within a bowl formed by lopping off several mountains 90 miles northwest of Tokyo.
At that time, Motegi-machi was one of Tochigi’s least populous towns and was experiencing severe flooding. Abe had been searching for ways to revitalize Motegi-machi’s economy and draw in new residents.
Honda’s proposal for a large-scale leisure facility on hilly land near the lower river area in town was met with enthusiasm by residents, even being proposed at a meeting of the municipal council dedicated to discussing its future.
As Vice-President Koichiro Yoshizawa of the company toured the site, he quickly decided that building was worth undertaking. To ensure its reception by local communities and visitors alike, he planned regular meetings to explain why such facilities were being constructed.
Honda made a hard but smart decision that would pay dividends down the road. Their management team would soon develop facilities utilizing advanced construction technologies.
An equally critical factor was that company executives were confident their efforts would be received positively by local residents and tourists who traveled there specifically to watch MotoGP races. They expected people from all over the country would visit, while tourists expected it would become popular.
Honda hosted its inaugural race at this circuit in March 1998, introducing American motor sports to Japan for the very first time.
Motegi is an epicenter for motorsports. A popular destination among fans of all kinds of racing events – Indycar, NASCAR and CART among them – Motegi also hosts a museum dedicated to motor vehicle history that houses over 300 cars and motorcycles within its ‘Honda Collection Hall’.
Twin Ring Motegi
Twin Ring Motegi is an innovative race track in Japan, comprising of a 1.549-mile (2.493-km) oval track and 2.98-mile (4.8-km) road course that blends American and European architecture. Opened for racing events in 1997, it has since hosted events from IndyCar Series races as well as NASCAR series competition and MotoGP races.
This oval course features low banks and egg shapes, with turns three and four having tighter turns than others; thus resulting in its nickname as the “Twin Ring.”
Honda International Raceway serves as a regular venue for the Japanese Motorcycle Grand Prix and other races held within its MotoFighter Japan series, in addition to MotoGP races each year. Furthermore, it houses the Honda Collection Hall museum housing an assortment of motorcycles, cars and racing machines from Honda’s extensive inventory.
Attractions at the track include its safe driving education facility, designed to encourage drivers to employ advanced techniques for avoiding accidents. Combining high-tech equipment with traditional teaching methods creates a realistic driving experience that encourages good safety habits among drivers.
In 1997, a group of Honda employees initiated this ambitious project. Inspired by their love for motorsports, these employees came together to construct an internationally acclaimed circuit which would bring advanced technologies to drivers of the future.
Honda made his dream a reality in 1997 when they opened the track to the public. Since then, it has become an attraction for fans of all ages and houses a variety of Honda facilities such as its Collection Hall, Safe Driving School, Dirt Track Go Karts Hotel Restaurant Shops and Event Halls.
Japan boasts only one oval track of this kind; this oval track primarily serves car racing events but has also hosted two NASCAR races.
On March 28, 1998, this city also saw its inaugural IndyCar race held here – the inaugural Indy Japan 300 hosted by Honda was held. Mexican driver Adrian Fernandez captured victory.
At its current site, multiple IndyCar and NASCAR exhibition races, along with other forms of racing have taken place over time. Over time, modifications were made to both oval track configuration as well as road course, which has also been added multiple times over.

Dempsey Racing
Patrick Dempsey from Grey’s Anatomy and Italian soccer superstar Alessandro Del Piero have combined forces to launch a motor racing team with hopes of participating in Le Mans 24-hour endurance race in France this June, as well as competing this year in American Le Mans Series races. They have applied for inclusion into Le Mans as well as applying to take part.
The team, based in the US, has set itself an ambitious long-term goal of becoming one of the premier sports car teams in North America. Additionally, it has formed a close working relationship with Mazda–who won Le Mans in 1991–which has provided Dempsey with one of his primary vehicles during his racing career.
Dempsey has taken on many roles throughout his racing career. Starting off in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and progressing up the ladder until his latest competitions at IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.
He has previously competed in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and Global Rallycross races, and this weekend will make his ALMS debut at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca driving for Trina Solar/GNC Beverages/Motegi Racing No. 27 team using Judd-powered Lola B12-80 coupe powered by Judd engines.
Dempsey may have only just taken his inaugural LMP2 prototype drive, but it won’t be his last time behind the wheel. He and co-driver Joe Foster plan to travel to France later in 2019 for full season racing action.
Dempsey and his team have taken a huge step forward, the result of hard work and commitment over many years.
Dempsey will start his 2012 racing career off right by competing in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron in P2, hoping to transition into full season P2 program for 2013.
Dempsey is taking his motorsport career into a whole new phase with this move into ALMS – it’s more than a job; motorsport is his passion that he wants to pursue as his professional pursuit.
He’s had plenty of experience driving GT cars and knows what it takes to win, so now he is keen on taking his skills one step further by racing an LMP2 prototype car. He believes he has more potential than the average P2 driver and believes he can challenge for championship titles with his talents.
